In the study of human-computer interaction, a natural user interface is an interaction paradigm in which the interface is largely invisible to the end user. Contrasted with WIMP (“windows, icons, menus, pointer”) interfaces found in traditional computing systems, NUIs rely on seamless, intuitive interaction rather than artificial control devices. While companies such as Apple and Google have rapidly popularized the NUI model, this interaction paradigm brings with it a unique set of design challenges, constraints, and ethical considerations.
While I was doing my literature research, I had the chance to meet the Natural User Interface notion. All the researches were so meaningful but an article by Donald Norman had blown my mind. It was about natural user interfaces and he was hypothesizing that ‘Natural User Interfaces are not Natural’.
First, it says that an affordance is a property of the environment or context. Third, the action elicited by the environment is supported by the environment. Stated simply, the user is likely to “do the right thing” without training. The “right thing” is an action that is successful in the near term and increases the likelihood that the next action will be successful. In terms of the connection of NUI to biomimicry, we can look at it in terms of using the natural world around us as inspiration. In pure biomedics, we look to nature as a “mentor” and “model.” In NUI, we look at the natural abilities of humans to inspire and model to generate new modes of interaction.
While the techniques of research may not change in a fundamental way, their goal and their coin24h application may change dramatically. In this paper we present a research project that aims at exploring NUI devices within the Accessibility context, with the goal of proposing ways to promote a better design for NUI technologies.
